Remote Sensing Monitoring of Oasis Spatial-temporal Changes in Alxa during Recent 35 Years |

Abstract Oasis is an highly concentration area of human activities in arid region, its spatial-temporal changes have a vital impact on regionally social and economic development. Based on Landsat images of 5 periods from 1975 to 2010 in Alxa, Inner Mongolia, China, visual interpretation and GIS spatial analysis were used to extract oasis information and analyze its spatial-temporal pattern changes. Results show that the oasis area for different counties in Alxa ranks as: Alxa Left Banner>Ejin Banner > Alxa Right Banner. From 1975 to 2010, the oasis area in Alxa decreased before 2000 and increased since 2000, in which the change of meadow area was the largest, accounting for 64.92% of the total oasis area change. In the 35 years, natural meadow was always dominant oasis type in Alxa.
