Nabkha Morphology, Development and Sand-fixing Capability of Caragana stenophylla in the Inner Mongolia Plateau

Abstract  

In this study, we compared the nabkhas morphology, development and sand-fixing capability for Caragana stenophylla in the different habitats of the Inner Mongolia Plateau. The results showed that the order of shrub aboveground biomass, shrub diameter and height, nabkhas diameter and height, nabkha slope angle, and nabkha volume in the different habitats were all as follows: typical desert>desert steppe>typical steppe; the order of shrub sand-fixing efficiency was as follows: desert steppe>typical steppe>typical desert. For shrub nabkha of C. stenophylla in the different habitats, the horizontal expansion was all faster than vertical expansion. Based on the results of this study, we can draw some main conclusions: There were two factors determining the difference of plant nabkha morphology, volume and sand-fixing capacity. Firstly, the environment diversity could give birth to the differences of shrub morphology and size, which caused nabkha differences; secondly, the differences of environment and sources of sand would bring out the diversity of the shrub nabkha volume and sand-fixing capacity. The shrub nabkha development of C. stenophylla was related to the environment factor.
