Abstract: Soil moisture largely determines the growth status and distribution pattern of desert sand-fixing vegetation. Different vegetation has different demands on soil moisture. The study on the distribution characteristics of soil water content in root areas of different vegetation can provide theoretical basis for rational regulation of sand-fixing vegetation distribution pattern. The Nitraria sphaerocarpa and Calligonum mongolicum in desert-oasis ecotone in the middle reaches of the Heihe River are studied in the first half of May (before the rainy season) and the middle of October (after the rainy season) in 2014-2018. Soil samples with different depths in the root zone of the vegetation were drilled to study the distribution characteristics and variability of soil water content in the vertical and horizontal directions of different vegetation root zones. The result showed that:(1) The deeper the soil layer, the higher the soil moisture content in the root zone of sand-fixing vegetation; (2) Except for 2017, the soil moisture content in the root area of the two sand-fixation vegetation types in other years was greater after the rainy season than before the rainy season. (3) The farther away from vegetation root zone in horizontal direction, the greater soil moisture content. (4) The variability of soil water content in superficial layer is more higher than the deep layer in the vertical direction, and the variability in the vertical direction is greater than the horizontal direction.
