Abstract The grayscale thresholds for meteorological satellite channels were selected to determine the sandstorm area in Ningxia and adjacent region by using GMS-5 or FY-2 geostationary meteorological satellite data, based on the spectrum differences of different objects(such as water, land surface, desert, snow, meso-high cloud and low cloud, and sandstorm) in infrared, visible and vapor channels, and supported by classified synthesis process and assessment technology with multi parameters, on which an objective evaluating and monitoring system on sandstorm which provides the functions of data collection, analysis and dynamic monitoring was set up.
