Abstract The characteristics of climate variability are diverse in different area. And this variability can bring all kinds of influence to vegetation. The cognition to the characteristics and relevant analysis on vegetation response to this variability help us more deeply know the effect of global change on arid area. By means of remote sensing and statistics this paper quantitatively studies the climatic variability and the response of NDVI to it in arid area of northwestern China from 1981 to 2001 based on NOAA/AVHRR data of 21 years and the simultaneously meteorological information. The result indicates that there is a significant correlation between the NDVI value and the climate variables in the whole study area from 1981 to 2001. Especially in Xinjiang, the NDVI change is apparently affected by precipitation, temperature and their combination. And the NDVI change is positively correlative with annual total precipitation, average annual temperature and annual humidity in Xinjiang. In Hexi corridor of Gansu and the Qaidam basin of Qinghai there is no apparent change trend of NDVI and it is just the place where precipitation varies least. In arid area of northwestern China, precipitation resource is the most key factor to vegetation growth and eco-environmental construction. If only to make good use of precipitation, the sustainable development of environment, society and economy in the arid area of northwestern China can be achieved.
