Research Review on Heavy Metal Contamination of the Soil-Plant System along Roadside

Abstract  Road construction and transportation activities let out heavy metal pollutant into surrounding environment and give rise to heavy metal contamination of soil and high level of heavy metals in plants along roadside. The contaminant could also affect animals and human through food chain and pose a threat to regional ecological security. The change rule of traffic-related heavy metals concentrations with the increase of distance away from the curb and soil depth,the influencing factors of spatial distribution of traffic-related heavy metals in soils along roadside and the occurrence form of heavy metals in soils along roadside is summarized in review. The paper also summarized studies of heavy metal pollution of plants along roadside in four aspects: (1) The approach of plants absorbing heavy metals along roadside, (2) the relationship between heavy metal content in plant and the distance away from curb, (3) heavy metal content differences in different plants along roadside, (4) differences of heavy metal content in different organs of the same plant species.
