Abstract: Ecological vulnerability assessment is an important aspect of comprehensive ecological assessment and an important basis of ecological planning. The ecological vulnerability of each counties of Gansu province was assessed in this paper based on the monitoring data of three types of the most important and widespread land degradation, namely aeolian desertification, soil erosion (water erosion), soil salinization. Aeolian desertification and soil salinization occurred mainly in Gansu corridor, and soil erosion (water erosion) occurred mainly in the eastern and southern regions of Gansu province. The assessment results showed that there were 2 counties with very severe ecological vulnerability, 4 counties with severe ecological vulnerability, 26 counties with moderate ecological vulnerability, 30 counties with slight ecological vulnerability and 19 counties with very slight ecological vulnerability in 81 counties existing land degradation. There wasnt land degradation and corresponding ecological vulnerability in Hezuo region. Ecological vulnerability distribution showed a reinforcing trend from south to north in Gansu province.

Key words: land degradation, ecological vulnerability, assessment, Gansu province
