Abstract: Gansu is one of the provinces that are seriously threatened by desertification and has a big area of desertification with various types in China. The total area of desert, Gobi and desertification land is 1.43×10⁷ hm² ,occupying 31.81% of the total land area in Gansu province. The occurring and development of desertification which extends at speed of 543 hm²per year has brought serious damage and threats to the ecoenvironment, natural resources, social economic development and people's lives in a vast desertification area and the nearby area in Gansu province. The people of Gansu province controlled desert more than 40 years, and made lots of achievements, so Gansu province was awarded the title of advanced province on desert control in China by China government in 1991. From the resource and environment survey, the technological researches and extension of desert control, the application and basis researches, and the international cooperation and academic exchanges, this article summed up the progress on desert control research of Gansu province. Through summarizing and considering, the train of thought and countermeasures on desert control of Gansu province were put forward.
