Abstract: The effects of different weed removal treatments on the growth of Glycyrrhiza ulalensis Fisch in Shapotou ex. situ conservation base were studied. The results showed that: (1) G. ulalensis Fisch which have been continuously weeded for 16 years since the 11th year after being planted (treatment A) began to grow earlier than those with weeds be removed only in one year (treatment B), G. ulalensis Fisch with weeds never be removed (treatment C) began to grow latest, while the final height of G. ulalensis Fisch under three treatments was almost the same; (2) The values of inflorescence, infructescence, mature seeds and the ratio of infructescence to inflorescence, weight of seeds to reproductive organ, weight of reproductive organ to biomass and the length of infructescence of G. ulalensis under treatment A were higher than those under treatment B, while these parameters under treatment C were the smallest because G. ulalensis under treatment C cannot blossom and seed normally; (3) The existence of weeds improved the soil condition in desert area, and the total nitrogen and organic matter in experimental fields was far greater than those in shifting sands, which was beneficial to the growth of G. ulalensis Fisch. The competition between weeds and G. ulalensis Fisch was intensified with the increase of the weeds, which inhibited the growth of G. ulalensis Fisch.
